September 2013 – International Day of Peace

Hello Jules,

Thanks once again for the beautiful artwork. It is displayed year-round in the front hallway of our school.

Gamble Rogers Middle School in St. Augustine, Florida, observed International Day of World Peace in September 2013. Students in Language Arts classes created literary peace signs promoting books about peace. The media center displayed the Peace Pals International Art Tour featuring award winning art from students around the world, and the art classes compiled several Pinwheels for Peace displays throughout the school.

On May 31, 2013, Girl Scouts from Troop #4446, San Marcos, CA presented a Peace Pole to their school, Carrillo Elementary.  The Peace Pole was inspired by many hours of research, brainstorming, interviewing and selling lots of Girl Scout cookies.

The troop had been working on their Bronze Award Project, the highest honor a Junior Girl Scout can achieve, since October 2012.  They were inspired by Mahatma Gandhi, a leader and humanitarian, to work on a project that would embrace change and make a difference in their school and community.

The Girl Scouts decided on a 8 foot tall Peace Pole as their gift to Carrillo Elementary.  The languages represented on the Peace Pole: English, Spanish, French, Japanese, Chinese, Greek, Hebrew and Persian, were chosen to reflect the cultural background of the Girl Scout troop, their community and the creator of the Peace Pole.  If they had space, they would have chosen all 6,500 languages spoken in the world to be recognized on their Peace Pole.

Girl Scouts May Peace Prevail On Earth

The Girl Scouts hope that their Peace Pole will bring people of all faiths, backgrounds and culture to embrace the universal message of Peace.  They feel that having a Peace Pole at their school will inspire students, parents, staff, visitors and the community to spread the message of peace everywhere they go.  The Girls Scouts of Troop 4446 believe that if we all work together, we can change our community and our world to make it a better place.

Since the dedication ceremony in 2013, Girl Scouts from Troop #4446 have visited the site to plant water wise plants to beautify the Peace Pole.

Thank you.

May Peace Prevail On Earth!
Christina Williams, Girl Scout Leader, Troop #4446

Gamble Rogers Middle School observed the International Day of Peace, September 21st, 2012. Thousands of organizations and hundreds of millions of people worldwide participated in the global observance of the United Nations International Day of Peace.

Students in reading classes created peace signs related to books they had read. In the media center, students signed Peace Pledges and toured the Peace Pals International Art Gallery featuring award-winning student art from 68 countries.

The Environmental Club took part in the ENO Tree Planting Activity for Peace Day. ENO is a global on-line school network for sustainable development, based in Finland. Environmental themes are studied throughout the school year and campaigns arranged simultaneously around the world. This year’s theme was Peace is Green. The Garden Club of St. Augustine donated

potted trees and supplied the name of the tree and the suggested best spot for that type of plant. All trees were natives and prolific in each gardener’s landscape. The following members of the Garden Club joined students and staff for the event:

Guerry Bradley, Vice President of the Geranium Circle
Terry Nelson, President of the Garden Club of St. Augustine and member of Geranium Circle
Angela Demetriades, Treasurer, Tour of Homes
Pat Gray, President of Geranium Circle

International Day of Peace was established by a unanimous resolution of the United Nations in 1981 as a day that “shall be devoted to commemorating and strengthening the ideals of Peace both within and among all nations and peoples.”

Gamble Rogers Middle School is proud to have observed the 2012 UN International Day of Peace as humanity joined together to build a new Culture of Peace – a Sustainable Peace for a Sustainable Future.

[:en]Art class in Japanese High school – Peace Pals International Art Contest[:]

June 15, 2011 By Peace Pals International

Warm greetings to the Peace Makers around the world from Japan,

My wife and I are running Peace education programs “Earth Kids Space” in two locations in Iwate Prefecture, in north-eastern Japan. “Earth Kids Space” programs are promoted by the Goi Peace Foundation in Oshu city and Ichinoseki city

In 2011 Earth Kids of  Iwate was asked to participate in the Peace Pals Art Exhibition and Awards by the WPPS Japan office.

The theme of the contest was very timely for Earth Kids in Iwate, since we were hit by the Great Eastern Japan Earth Quake and Tsunami and we wanted to respond to the kind messages from the various countries to Japan.  We are very happy that some of our children were chosen each year as winners or finalists since then.  Earth Kids children will participate in the contest this year again.

I have been giving classes as an art lecturer at Senmaya high school since this April when the Japanese new school year started. The upper age limit was 16, so it was my first idea that I will give my 10th grade students a chance.  Indeed school curriculum schedule is tight, so I decided to let my students who finished their task early to work on the contest.

Art class in Japanese High school International Art Contest

The students seemed to be very new to paint such a theme given by the contest, so they struggled finding an idea for their painting, but still they enjoyed.  I teach my students in my class that “True Art contains the consciousness of positively creating peace.”  The students experienced finding such a consciousness within themselves through this art production for the contest.
